We’ve said it before and we’ll say it again: the phrase “literary festival” can sound a bit, well, pompous.
That’s why, at Monty Lit Fest, we want to challenge the idea that book festivals are only for a certain ‘type’ of person. Instead, we firmly believe that they should be of – and for – their local communities, catering for everyone from avid readers to the people who are a bit curious to anyone who just wants a nice day out in a fabulous Welsh town.
But don’t just take our word for it. Here are five good reasons why Monty Lit Fest really is for everyone:
1. We believe in a ‘something for everyone’ programme. Yes, we have plenty of the usual lit fest fare: top fiction authors and a wide selection of non-fiction. But this year’s programme also includes our now legendary Late Lounge; our Saturday night Big Quiz and our first ever film screening.
2. We want to nurture the next generation of readers. We’re hugely proud to be running our first Jill Kibble Monty Mini Fest this year, partnering with award-winning Welsh children’s publisher Firefly Press to bring you stories and fun for children of all ages. Make a family weekend of it!
3. We want to encourage aspiring writers. Why not try one of two FREE writers’ workshops we’re running with the University of Aberystwyth Centre for Creativity and Wellbeing (details here and here)?
4. We will celebrate creativity in all its forms. Visit our art exhibition featuring the work of over 20 local artists and take part in a FREE art workshop. There’ll also be music from Monty Folk and friends and readings from the Montgomery creative writing group. And you’ll be able to browse all the lovely books in not just one, but two Festival bookshops.
5. And last, but certainly not least, the cake is back. Once again, we’ll be enjoying the creativity of local bakers raising money for their community groups. The pizza van will be with us again, and Montgomery’s eateries will be offering a fine array of food and drink.
So whether you’re an experience festival-goer or a first-timer, we’re sure you’ll find that celebrating the written word and bringing authors and readers together is simply a huge amount of fun.
Go on, give us a try.
Tickets for paid events are available online, or in person at The Montgomery Bookshop or Ivy House Café in Montgomery.
