Which of us doesn’t like to poke around in other people’s houses, to know what they look like and explore their history.

Gavin Plumley is our lyrical guide as he uncovers the story of Stepps House, a three-storey building in Pembridge, Herefordshire that has become his home with his husband. Alastair.

Through history, art, memoir and landscape, Gavin traces his house through various hands and eras, painting a picture of a past that tells us plenty about life in the Marches and resonates powerfully with our present.

Gavin Plumley is a cultural historian whose work spans numerous periods and disciplines. He is the author of A Home for All Seasons. He also appears frequently on BBC Radio 3 and Radio 4, has written for newspapers and magazines worldwide and gives talks at leading museums and galleries. He grew up in Wales, before moving to London, and studied music at Keble College, Oxford. He lives in Herefordshire with his husband and their dogs. gavinplumley.com
