Janice Hallett’s debut novel, The Appeal<\/em>, has been shortlisted for the Crime & Thriller Book of the Year Award at this year’s British Book Awards.<\/p>\n

Universally known as the Nibbies (because the awards themselves are in the shape of a pen nib), the annual Awards celebrate the biggest successes in the British publishing world – from the best books to top publishers, imprints and editors; the best bookshops and booksellers; literary agents and rights people; designers, marketeers and publicity campaigns.<\/p>\n

The Appeal<\/em> has gone down a storm since it was published last year. It’s an epistolary cosy crime novel (yes!) told through the e-mails and WhatsApp messages of a not-so-cosy local amateur dramatic society. It’s a totally immersive reading experience and a brilliant example of the genre. Unsurprisingly, the first print run sold out within days. It was also a Waterstones Thriller of the Month and its bestselling debut novel of 2021. That’s quite a feat, earning Hallett a spot on a Nibbies shortlist alongside the likes of Val McDermid, Richard Osman and Paula Hawkins.<\/p>\n

Janice’s publisher, Viper Books<\/a>, has also been shortlisted in the Imprint of the Year category.<\/p>\n
