Patrick Laurie\u2019s native Galloway is one of the most isolated and insular parts of the British Isles. While working on his family cattle farm there, he reconnects with an ancient rural heritage, lamenting the passing of a way of life that bound together people, cattle and wild birds, but has now fallen prey to depopulation and commercial forest \u2013 with all that implies for native species such as the curlew. \u00a0<\/p>

Hear from Patrick as he shares his story with Fieldwork Book Club\u2019s Adam Bedford.<\/p>

Patrick Laurie<\/strong> is a farmer and freelance journalist, the author of <\/span>The Black Grouse<\/em> and the bestselling <\/span>Native: Life in a Vanishing Landscape<\/em>, shortlisted for the Wainwright Prize for Nature Writing in 2020. His blog, <\/span>Working for Grouse<\/em>, is visited by over 30,000 visitors each year. As well as writing, he runs a small farm in the Galloway hills and works on a number of projects which support conservation projects on farmland.<\/span><\/p>

Adam Bedford<\/strong> has studied and worked in and around agriculture for the past 20 years. In his day job he represents and advises farmers, and in his spare time runs the ‘Fieldwork Book Club,’ an online book club with 500 subscribers across the world reading books on food, farming and the natural world and interviews different authors every month. Adam lives rurally near York with his family.\u00a0 \u00a0<\/span><\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/section>\n\t\t\t\t
